Portugal and the Portuguese Society of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery (SPORL-CCP)

Portugal, founded in 1139, is the westernmost country in Europe and one of the world’s oldest nations. The Portuguese played a leading role in the Age of Discoveries, forging global ties that remain strong, with more than two million citizens living abroad.

Scientific curiosity has always marked our history. Nobel laureate Egas Moniz invented cerebral angiography in 1949, a milestone in medicine. Medical practice in Portugal has been regulated since 1392. The first medical schools and hospitals appeared in the 15th century, and early Portuguese texts described dissections and the anatomy of the ear, temporal bone, and olfaction. In 1825, the first Portuguese description of mastoidectomy was published, and from 1835 otolaryngology became a regular topic in national journals.

Today, all nine medical schools include compulsory ENT rotations. Residency lasts five years, nationally regulated, and provides extensive surgical and clinical training. Residents undertake international electives, many finishing with publications and presentations abroad. Portuguese ENT departments also welcome international trainees.

Founded in 1953, SPORL-CCP has more than 700 members and 125 residents. The President is Professor Pedro Escada, Vice-Presidents Professor Dr. João Eloi Moura  and Dr. Vítor Correia da Silva, and the Secretary-General is Professor Paulo Vera-Cruz. The wonderful city of Porto will proudly host GICCA 2027 under the host Dr. Correia da Silva and SPORL-CCP.

SPORL-CCP is dedicated to scientific excellence, education, and international collaboration with CEORL-HNS.
