Dear Colleagues, Dear Friends

For the second year in a row Turku, Finland is approaching Christmas in a beautiful weather with a cover a new snow, temperature about – 10o C, every now and then a clear sky with sunshine. This is a very nice repetition from last year and I am sure Santa Claus and his reindeers wait eagerly for their trip from Korvatunturi, Lapland, Finland to visit all nice children and adults wherever members of the European Academy of ORL-HNS celebrate their Christmas and New Year. I wonder how these two years fit into the scenario of global warming?

2010 was an active year for the EAORL-HNS as well as for EUFOS, the UEMSORL H&N Section and the Confederation of European ORL-HNS. The European Board Examination (EBE) has been making good progress under the guidance of Professor Klaus Albegger, Doctor Maria de la Mota and their working group. As planned, the second written exam (part I) was successfully arranged in Pamplona during the ESPO meeting June 2010. The first oral (part II) EBE examination was arranged in the beautiful city of Vienna in September.

Many good candidates not only from Europe, but from various parts of the world participated and the vast majority passed the exams. I am happy once more to send them my best congratulations and hope that they have received their diploma. The next oral (part II) EBE examination will be arranged in Vienna on November 19, 2011.

The planning of the first Confederation Congress arranged by EUFOS in collaboration with EAORL-HNS has actively continued. The announcements have been sent out by the President, Professor Manuel Bernal-Sprekelsen and his team. The congress, which will be held July 2-6, 2011 in Barcelona has received many abstracts and a lot of interest also from countries outside Europe. You can find more information on . You are all cordially invited to actively participate, meet old friends and make new ones during these days in the very nice congress centre and beautiful city of Barcelona. The next written (part I) EBE examination will also take place during the meeting.

The UEMS-ORL H&N Section had – under the presidency of Adrian Agius – a very successful meeting in October in Malta. The main topic of the meeting chaired by Professor Karl Hörmann was the Bologna process and its consequences for medical specialist training. Important further steps were also made concerning the subspecialty training programs, where facial plastic and reconstructive surgery was discussed based on a proposal for a logbook. As you can see, 2010 has been a busy year for the European ENT-HNS organisations. It has been a pleasure to see the progress made in various fields. For updating your information, please follow the web pages (,, I am convinced, that 2011 will be another exciting year for European Otorhinolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery.

I take this opportunity to thank all the colleagues and co-workers with whom I have had the possibility to work during 2010. My special thanks go Magister Andrea Balcar, the permanent secretary of EAORL-HNS.

I wish you all a Peaceful and Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous year in 2011.
